We have Lab01–03.exe file, and we need to answer the following questions:
  1. Upload the Lab01–03.exe file to http://www.VirusTotal.com/. Does it match any existing antivirus definitions?
  2. Are there any indications that this file is packed or obfuscated? If so, what are these indicators? If the file is packed, unpack it if possible.
  3. Do any imports hint at this program’s functionality? If so, which imports are they and what do they tell you?
  4. What host- or network-based indicators could be used to identify this malware on infected machines?

Question 1

Upload the Lab01–03.exe file to http://www.VirusTotal.com/. Does it match
any existing antivirus definitions?

Answer:

We got 67/71 matches, so we know now that it’s malicious.

Lab01–03.exe

Question 2

Are there any indications that this file is packed or obfuscated? If so, what are these indicators? If the file is packed, unpack it if possible.

Answer:

Using Exeinfo PE, we see that the file packed with unknown packer, and it can’t detect it.

It recommends to us to use die (Detect It Easy) tool, let’s go to it and see what we will get.

and now we this that the file is packed by a packer called “FSG”, and as we’ve learned in this chapter for now, we can’t unpack it with our tools and techniques.

Question 3

Do any imports hint at this program’s functionality? If so, which imports are they and what do they tell you?

Answer:

since the file is packed and we know for now how to unpack it, we can’t see a lot in it, just KERNEL32.DLL Library, and other two imports which indicates to us that the file is packed.

Question 4

What host- or network-based indicators could be used to identify this malware on infected machines?

Answer:

We also can’t answer this question now, because we don’t know how to unpack the file with our current tools and techniques.
